Vinoo Mankad Trophy: Tamil Nadu Eliminate Odisha, Storm Into Quarterfinals

Rajkot, October 25, 2025: Odisha bowed out of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy U-19 One-Day Tournament (Elite Group) after suffering a 134-run defeat against Tamil Nadu in the first pre-quarterfinal match held at the Sanosara Cricket Ground, Rajkot, on Saturday. The result sent Tamil Nadu into the quarterfinals, while Odisha’s promising campaign came to an end despite several noteworthy performances throughout the tournament.

Tamil Nadu Dominate with the Bat

Opting to bat first, Tamil Nadu put on a commanding batting display, amassing 366 for 5 in 50 overs. The innings was anchored by brilliant centuries from Vineeth VK and captain Abhinav Kannan, who showcased maturity and power in their stroke play.

Tamil Nadu’s openers provided a strong foundation as Krish E (45) and P Kush Bardia (61) added 73 runs for the first wicket. After their dismissals, Vineeth and Kannan took control, stitching together a massive partnership that dismantled Odisha’s bowling attack.

Vineeth’s fluent 139 off 121 balls included a flurry of boundaries and sixes, while Kannan remained unbeaten on 101 off 85 balls, steering Tamil Nadu past the 350-mark.

For Odisha, Sambit Beja was the most successful bowler with figures of 2 for 53, while Piyus Ranjan Mantri claimed one wicket. However, the rest of the bowling unit struggled to contain the onslaught.

Odisha’s Chase Falters Despite Anand’s Heroics

Chasing a stiff target of 367, Odisha’s innings never quite took off as they were reduced to 1 for 1 early on. Middle-order resistance came from Biswajeet Pradhan (52), Sambit Beja (49), and Aditya Anand, who fought valiantly with an unbeaten 89 off 92 balls. Anand’s composed innings was the lone highlight of Odisha’s chase, featuring a mix of resilience and elegant stroke play.

Tamil Nadu’s bowlers kept the pressure intact throughout. BK Kishore and Vineeth VK shared the spoils with three wickets each, while D Deepesh contributed with two scalps. Odisha were eventually bowled out for 232 in 47 overs, handing Tamil Nadu a comfortable victory.

A Promising Campaign for Odisha

Despite the defeat, Odisha earned praise for their spirited performance in the group stages, where they qualified for the knockouts of the national U-19 competition. The young side, led by captain Sambit Beja and coached under the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) development program, showed significant improvement and competitive intent throughout the season.
