From Motherhood to Medal: Pallavi Payeng’s Emotional Comeback to Khelo India Glory

Raipur, March 30: In a story that blends sacrifice, resilience, and determination, weightlifter Pallavi Payeng has emerged as a symbol of courage after clinching a silver medal at the Khelo India Tribal Games.

But behind this achievement lies a deeply emotional journey—one that required her to make an unimaginable choice as a mother.

A Heartbreaking Decision

When Pallavi’s daughter was just six months old, she stood at a life-altering crossroads: give up her passion for weightlifting or step away from her child to chase her dreams.

Encouraged by her husband, Sukhawon Thouwmung, and supported by her mother who took care of the infant, Pallavi chose to return to training—despite the emotional weight of leaving her baby behind.

“It was not easy. Only a mother understands what it takes to return after childbirth,” Pallavi shared.

Fighting Through Doubts and Distance

Today, her daughter is four years old, splitting time between Pallavi’s residence in Sarupathar and her grandmother’s home in Golaghat. The distance, however, came with emotional struggles and constant self-doubt.

Yet, her family remained her backbone. Her husband, a Border Security Force driver and former national-level boxer, stood firmly by her side throughout the journey.

A Comeback Full of Struggles

Returning to competitive sports after motherhood was far from smooth. In 2023, Pallavi finished sixth at the state championships in Golaghat. The following year brought more frustration as she struggled to perform in Dibrugarh.

But giving up was never an option.

The Turning Point

In 2025, her perseverance began to pay off. She secured a silver medal at the Tezpur state championships, followed by gold at the ASMITA League. Another gold this year confirmed her return to peak form.

Then came the defining moment—winning silver in the women’s 69kg category at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games in Raipur.

A Dream Realized

“This silver medal feels like a breakthrough. It gives me confidence that I belong at this level,” Pallavi said with pride.

Hailing from the Mising Tribe in Assam, Pallavi’s journey from motherhood to the podium is more than a sporting achievement—it’s an inspiration for countless women balancing dreams and responsibilities.

More Than Just a Medal

Pallavi Payeng’s story is a powerful reminder: success often demands sacrifice, but with unwavering support and determination, dreams can still rise—stronger than ever.
